cPanel issues (resolved)

We are currently experiencing some problems with our cPanel installation. We are currently looking into the issue and doing all we can to resolve it ASAP. Thanks for your understanding and sorry for any inconvenience.

Edit – 27 Oct 2008 16:23: The problem should now be resolved. Thanks for your patience.

PHP 5 support

On Saturday 9 February, we are scheduling 2 minutes of downtime during the window of 00:00 – 01:00 GMT. We will be adding support for PHP 5.2.5. At the same time, we will also be upgrading PHP 4.4.7 to PHP 4.4.8. There will be an option added to cPanel control panel accounts to easily switch between PHP 4 and 5.

Santa brings second 100 Mbit connection

The team at GeniusHost wishes you a merry Christmas and a happy new year. Don’t think that Santa forgot about you, because we’ve just received your present early. If you check your stockings, you will find a second 100 Mbit connection, already live, and working to your advantage.

The secondary BGP feed from NetrinoUK Limited has been implemented, meaning more bandwidth, resulting in higher throughput. This gives the potential of reaching even greater download speeds from our servers. It also means greater reliability (a fail safe), as now if one transit provider experiences downtime, the second will still be available.

We prove that affordability and reliability are not trade-offs from each other at GeniusHost.

Have a great holiday!

Data centre switch (26/27 Oct) – Updated

Edit (27 Oct 2007) – This has now been completed!

This will be happening on the late evening of the 26th and early morning of the 27th October 2007.

Unfortunately, our current data centre is no longer suitable for us. This means we have decided to relocate our servers to the BlueSquare data centre in the UK.

  • The current data centre have released notice that no new equipment can be installed until a full power audit is complete.
  • They’ve changed the access procedure so you now have to ring a different company for an access code, which wasn’t too bad. But, they have now added that you must ring the number again to get a code to be allowed out of the building.
  • When issues with data centre are detected, in our opinion it takes an unreasonable time until a resolution.
  • To top it all off, they switched to their backup power for a routine check the other night, and one of the load banks killed the UPS that keeps air conditioning and lighting on, so there were 40 minutes of no air conditioning. The whole data floor was at double the ambient temperature for around 20 minutes.

No action is needed on your part; you do not need to change any settings and all IP addresses will stay the same.

We will try and keep disruption to a minimal. However, since we are keeping our hardware, we have to physically move it from A to B. In the absolute worst case, down time will be a maximum of 5 hours. However, it should not take anywhere near as long as that.

cPanel updates configuration changed

cPanel’s automatic update feature has caused problems and has now been permanently disabled. For at least the second time, Apache (our web server software) failed to start after an update. We have decided future updates will be done manually whilst the server is being supervised, to stop this problem reoccurring.

Fortunately Apache was not down for long, and everything is now back to normal.

Rack being rewired

During 18 August between 02:00 – 08:00 BST, a short downtime may be experienced while we have the server rack re-wired in the data centre. This should improve speed and reliability for websites hosted with us. Sorry for any inconvenience caused and we will try to keep the downtime to a minimal.
